Schilling
Farms, Boyle's multi-use development located south
of Poplar in Collierville, is home to some of the
area's most prestigious neighborhoods. |
Throughout
its history, Boyle Investment Company has been guided
by its unique vision for the growth of Memphis. Boyle’s
dedication to excellence has provided Memphians with
a legacy of quality developments, which range from stately
Belvedere in Midtown to bustling Ridgeway Center in East
Memphis to Schilling Farms in Collierville.
A family-owned company with roots
that date back to the city’s founding, Boyle’s
foresight in real estate development has had a direct
impact on the landscape of the Memphis area.
- A
Rich History Shared with Memphis -
The Boyle family members
share the rich history of the city’s origins. Their
ancestor, John Overton, teamed with Andrew Jackson and
James Winchester to found the city of Memphis in 1819.
The family’s interest in real estate began in the
early 1900s with Edward Boyle’s development of
the Belvedere subdivision between Central and Union Avenues
in Midtown.
In 1933 three of Edward’s
sons—J. Bayard Boyle Sr., B. Snowden Boyle, and
Charles Boyle-followed their father’s lead and
established Boyle Investment Company. Today the company
remains family owned and is headquartered by CEO J. Bayard
Boyle Jr.—the son of cofounder Bayard Boyle Sr.—and
President Henry Morgan, Bayard Boyle Jr.’s brother-in-law.
The Boyle Brothers
began by buying land and developing residential
subdivisions and shopping centers. According to
Bayard Boyle Jr., "My
father was remarkably successful in acquiring key
pieces of property in growth corridors. He was
always looking for these opportunities."
In the 1950s Boyle became
a full-service real estate investment operation,
adding commercial and industrial properties. The
company’s services grew to include leasing
and management, construction, financing, insurance,

sales.
Because of Boyle’s visionary planning, today’s
map of East Memphis and beyond includes dozens of properties
that have been or are currently being developed by Boyle.
-
A Wealth of Residential Offerings -
Boyle became known regionally during
the 1960s as an outstanding residential planner—one
that gave attention to such details as maintaining design
integrity while offering a variety of price ranges and
desirable locations to prospective home buyers. Examples
of such projects can be found in subdivisions such as
River Oaks and Farmington.
 |
Boyle’s latest
developments include several projects in locations
strategic to the city’s pattern of growth.
These include Schilling Farms and Price Farms in
Collierville. These mixed-use commercial and residential
developments are expected to emerge as important
centers in one of the state’s fastest growing
communities. |
-
Originator of Memphis’ Office Parks -
In the 1970s Boyle developed Ridgeway
Center, the first office park in Memphis. Today the center
includes more than 1 million square feet of class A office
space, hotels, restaurants and condominiums, as well
as Boyle’s headquarters.
Boyle is a leader
in the development of first-class multi-use projects.
Following the establishment of Ridgeway Center, the company developed Humphreys
Center to the north, a complex urban commercial
center that includes general office space, modern
medical offices, hotel accommodations, and retail
stores. To the east of Ridgeway Center lies The
Shops of Regalia, which has become a prime location
for fine locally owned shops such as Oak Hall and
Only Kids. In 1996 the imposing new Sedgwick Center
strengthened the eastern edge of Ridgeway Center.
Beyond the Ridgeway area, Boyle developed the Village
Shops of Forest Hill in Germantown. |
|
As the
city expanded, Boyle responded with a growing inventory
of developments and services, particularly in east and
southeast Memphis. The firm was instrumental in establishing
the southern part of the city as an industrial hub with
South Perkins Industrial Park. More recently, Boyle was
selected to develop the Southeast Regional Headquarters
for the U. S. Postal Service and the new corporate headquarters
for Thomas & Betts Corporation.
While the majority of Boyle’s
work has taken place in Memphis, the company has also
developed projects in Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas,
Kentucky, Mississippi, and Florida. One of its most notable
recent projects outside Memphis was the 364,000 square-foot
power center known as Preston Shepard Place.
-
Successful Partnerships -
Boyle’s recipe for success
has been rooted in developing effective partnerships,
particularly with its tenants, and understanding exactly
what its customers want. By meeting its customers’ needs,
the company has secured a lengthy list of long-term clients. "Much
of our business is dependent on repeat business," says
Boyle.
In addition to an acute sense of
its clients’ needs, Boyle Investment attributes
its success to an extremely stable company workforce
whose members work well both as a team and with customers.
Proof of this accomplishment can be seen in Boyle’s
low turnover rate among employees.
Boyle Investment Company continues
to tailor its real estate portfolio according to the
anticipated needs of individuals and companies throughout
the region and beyond. As Shelby County grows, Boyle
will continue to go the extra mile for its customers
in order to bring the best residential and commercial
properties to a new generation of Memphians.
